ABOUT

The Cuca is a notorious figure in Brazilian folklore, often depicted as a malevolent trickster. Its form is both human and reptilian: the body of an alligator, with the striking, unnerving addition of blonde hair. This mythical creature deceives children by offering false promises, guiding them deep into the Amazon rainforest where it then ensnares and devours them. Interpretations of the Cuca vary; some view it as a vengeful witch, while others believe it to be a dragon-like entity. Central to its lore is a lullaby, sung by parents as a cautionary tale to warn children of the Cuca’s peril.

The world premiere was conducted by Daniele Rosina, and the 2025 Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Alternative Orchestra.
