His awareness regarding the diverse and individual needs of students is outstanding.
Dr Kirsty Devaney – Young Composers Project Leader
Vinicius has been actively engaged in music education and outreach initiatives across the West Midlands since 2019 with an aim of nurturing creativity and composition. He has worked with esteemed organizations such as the Orchestra of the Swan, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, the Young Composers Project, Quench Arts, and others with the purpose of offering interactive activities for young learners on a whole at both primary and secondary school levels.
Of special interest is Vinicius’s work on inclusive music schemes with the Orchestra of the Swan and Priestley Smith Specialist School. They have provided music-making, performance, instrumental tuition, and composition specifically for visually impaired and blind pupils. His contributions to these projects have led to successful performances and have been rewarded, including a BBC Midlands Today feature in 2020.
From 2021 to 2022, Vinicius worked as a music leader on the Interface project with Quench Arts, which aimed at young students from minority groups around Birmingham and collaborated with them in creating and playing new music with electronic instruments as a band. As a music leader, Vinicius was responsible for leading sessions on composition, synthesizer, electric guitar, and effect pedals. The outcome of this collaboration was the creation of Time Pressure.
From Spring 2022, Vinícius served as a composition mentor for Birmingham Contemporary Music Group Young Composers for two years. This project engages KS3 students in writing new music to be performed by BCMG musicians. Additionally, Vinícius was a composition tutor for the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Young Composers Project from Summer 2023 to Spring 2024. The project aims particularly at 14-18-year-old composers, helping them to compose new works for performance by Conservatoire students and graduates. In both projects, Vinícius delivered group composition sessions on a range of topics, as well as one-to-ne sessions with each young composer, advising them on their creative journey within the programme.
Currently, He is working with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Learning & Participation Team, contributing to the delivery of SoundLab, a young people’s project for young music makers. Vinícius typically leads the guitar section, but also delivers workshops promoting his Brazilian heritage, by encouraging cultural awareness and diversity among pupils and introducing elements of Brazilian music and culture throughout his sessions.
His insight into any specific issues a participant might be encountering was highly valuable and showed a great deal of care and consideration for each individual’s musical development.
