ABOUT

As a versatile composer, arranger-orchestrator, performer, and educator hailing from Brazil and currently residing in Birmingham, UK, Vinícius specializes in crafting works that span a wide spectrum of musical styles. His creative emphasis lies in exploring the nuances of timbre, aleatoricism, and challenging conventional ensemble norms by exploring performers’ independence within a collective setting. His works have earned recognition through performances by esteemed ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Swan, Contemporary Music for All, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Notable venues where his works have been performed include Symphony Hall (Birmingham), St John’s Smith Square (London), and the CBSO Centre (Birmingham).

Furthermore, Vinícius seamlessly integrates his Brazilian heritage into his creative endeavours by infusing his compositions with South American rhythms, Portuguese lyrics, and personal experiences from his time in Brazil. His melodic craftsmanship and lyrical compositions evoke the soulful essence of Brazilian Bossa Nova, characterized by a deliberate fusion of melody and lyrics to achieve a natural and conversational tone. Additionally, his works showcase a rich harmonic palette reminiscent of jazz and Bossa Nova, Japanese video game and chamber music, and French impressionistic music.

His music has been performed by a range of musicians and departments at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, the Orchestra of the Swan, the Sitwell Singers, Thallein, and most recently, the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Repertoire Orchestra, conducted by Daniele Rosina; as well as prestigious performers, including Rowland Sutherland (flute), David Le Page (violin), Simon Limbrick (percussion), and Antony Gray (piano).

Vinícius has been involved with a range of events and arts organizations around Birmingham, showcasing and performing his work in the Birmingham Flatpack Film Festival, Eastside Projects, and the Midlands Art Centre. Vinícius has scored MOURNING CLOAK (2022), an animation directed by Joshua Davies, which has collected several awards and selections across various film festivals in the UK, as well as a selection for a festival in Los Angeles, US.

I thoroughly enjoyed the very colourful and imaginative orchestrations; it was hard to believe how much was created in some cases from pieces for just solo guitar.

In his role as an arranger and orchestrator, he focuses on preserving the essence of the original work. He adds a playful touch to the ensemble and work by passing relevant musical material around everyone, creating dynamic changes in timbre. Performers and the general public often praise his orchestrations for being lively, playful, and organic. In March 2023, he inaugurated his tenure as an arranger and orchestrator by curating performances featuring his arrangements and orchestrations of compositions by Brahms, Gershwin, Prokofiev, and Ravel.

Vinícius was the principal arranger-orchestrator for the Romantic Revival Orchestra 2024 season, orchestrating a range of works to be performed at CBSO Centre in Birmingham throughout 2024. Additionally, he arranged Suite bergamasque for wind quintet and vibraphone, performed by ReVamp Collective, during a concert at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on February 2024.
