Chamber
Storm Prelude
December 2020
~4 minutes | five harps
About
This project marked my initial venture into collaborating with live performers at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic during the academic year 2020-21, first-year undergraduate composers like myself were matched with the harp department. Presented with the chance to compose for five harps, I enthusiastically embraced this opportunity.
Within this work, I delved into the concept of performer independence within an ensemble setting. The piece unfolds without a meter, prioritizing the manipulation of timbre to conjure the atmospheric essence of tropical thunderstorms, reminiscent of my experiences living in Brazil.
