Summer Prelude-Carnival

February 2023
~6 minutes | chamber orchestra

About

This composition is the result of my creative pursuits during the first two years of my studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. It incorporates diverse elements and methods of musical notation to effectively express my artistic ideas, inspired by the approaches observed in some of Jonathan Harvey’s orchestral works. This work was recorded by Thallein and members of the Orchestra of the Swan, conducted by Dexter Drown.

This work comprises of two distinct sections, each spanning three minutes in duration. The first section emphasizes texture and soundscape, while the second section focuses on a syncopated and symphonic sound suitable for a small chamber group. The overarching aim of the piece is to incorporate the multifaceted nature of Brazilian summers, which range from airy and gentle breezes to sudden, soft rainstorms. Moreover, the composition seeks to capture the festive spirit of the Carnival season, which takes place across the summer in Brazil. In order to connect both sections, the prelude pre-emps some of the material of the Carnival section.
